State A to State Z

Most people use AI the way they use a search engine: ask a question, get an answer, move on. That is not how you unlock its actual power. The way you unlock it is by treating AI as a navigator for your life and your work. And navigators need two things to be useful: they need to know where you are, and they need to know where you are going.

I call these State A and State Z. State A is your honest, clear-eyed picture of your current reality: your skills, your resources, your constraints, your weaknesses. State Z is where you are headed, the vision, the goal, the destination that pulls you forward. Most people have a fuzzy version of both. They know they are somewhere uncomfortable and want to be somewhere better. But they have never done the work of actually naming either with precision.

This chapter is about building that precision. It is practical, it is a little uncomfortable, and it will probably require you to be more honest with yourself than you have been in a while. But once you have State A and State Z clearly articulated, you can give that context to AI and watch it become a genuinely powerful partner in getting from one to the other. The chapters that follow will show you exactly how to do that.
